Chapter Seventeen

Alex looked up when Geoff left the room, then lifted an eyebrow toward Jimmy. Jimmy just shrugged and made a face as he went to sit with his parents again. Alex was about to join them when a young servant came into the dining room and made a beeline toward where Alex was sitting. He stooped and whispered in Alex’s ear.

“Sir, there are some gentlemen out at the porch. They’re looking for Mr. Knowles.”

“Which Mr. Knowles?”

“Master Gabe, sir, but you know he’s not here and neither is the earl. Would you, uh, would you go see the guests, sir?”

Alex pulled back and stared at the servant. “What’s with the secret whispering? And you seem nervous. Is something wrong?”

The servant immediately straightened himself and cleared his throat.

“I’m sorry, sir, but no, I’m not nervous. They are—they are at the main entrance.” He said the last words swiftly and all but ran out of the room. Frowning, Alex rose from his chair, signaling to Jimmy that he was going for a while.

At the front door Alex saw two men dressed in dark suits. Both were tall—slightly taller than him—and well built. Their muscles bulged through their tight suits.

“What can I do for you, gentlemen?”

One of them who had been looking around the front garden turned to Alex, his eyes cold and calculating.

“Who are you? Where is Mr. Knowles?”

“Gabe? What do you need him for? And you—who are you?”

The other one took a step forward. “It doesn’t matter who we are. We need to speak to Gabe Knowles, or we’re going to have to use a bit of persuasion.”

That sent alarm through Alex. Soft hair prickled at the back of his neck. Persuasion? What kind of persuasion?

“Gabe is not home right now. There was an emergency. Anything you need to deal with him, you’ll have to tell me. I’m Alex Winchester, by the way. Gabe’s cousin.” Alex thought he saw concern flash across one of the men’s eyes, followed by a glint of what appeared to be a sneer.

“Alex Winchester?” The men shared glances. “Can we talk then, perhaps in a more private place?”

Alex lifted an eyebrow.

The men became restless and impatient.

“Come on, Mr. Winchester. The sooner we deal with this matter, the better.”

Alex had had a bad feeling about this since the beginning, but now he was even more convinced that there was something wicked about the men. He didn’t want to let them in. He wished Jimmy would suddenly turn up. Alex heard a sound behind him and glanced back. It was Geoff, complete with his luggage. Both of his eyebrows arched up now. Could tonight be any weirder?

“You’re leaving?” he asked Geoff in disbelief. “Gabe’s dad could use some support and you’re leaving?”

Geoff put his bag down. “I’m not much of a support staying here, am I?”

“So, what—are you going to the hospital? That’s actually a good idea, but I can’t leave the other guests here.”

“Uh, no.” Geoff gazed at Alex and the other two men. He looked nervous. “A partner called me.
